CAE Testing: pros and cons
CAE testing
is often times a repeated standard
used in the goat world
that is rarely accurately presented.
A CAE test will test antibodies,
those things that fight disease,
looking for the particular antibodies that fight CAE.
If the antibodies are present in the goat
then it means, presumedly,
that the goat's body has encountered CAE
and reacted to it
fought it
and has the antibodies to prove it.
Get it?
"Fought it".
Isn't that what we all want-
a goat that can fight CAE?
That is a disease resistant goat.
It is the same way a vaccine works.
And since there is no CAE vaccine,
it makes sense to expose a goat
so to build up immunity,
because CAE is prevelent
and will most likely be introduced to the goat anyway.
One could therefore interpret a positive result of a CAE test
with admiriation of an asymptomatic goat
and desire the goat's durability
as a desired herd characteristic.
Pharamceuticals are a business.
and thrive off (fear)/selling many tests.
It seems they acheived their goal in the goat world.
Ironically,
the result is a weakened immunity in the goat population
to a prevelent disease.
A healthy goat
will not succumb to CAE
but can be a carrier.
Keeping the herd healthy is key.
